Renovation of the Facade
Design Concept: With “The Edge” as the design concept, this renovation takes advantage of the building’s protruding location and incorporates a properly scaled and distinct volume into the site. This creates a new connection between the facade and the streetscape while preserving the striking character of a commercial building.
Material Application: A design technique of “solid vs. void” and “front-back correspondence” is adopted using steel plates and U profile glass. The undulating steel plates at the front exhibit a clear sense of volume, while the translucent U profile glass at the back introduces ambiguity to the boundary. Through the contrast and screening of street trees, the undulating and flowing corner is reconstructed with architectural language. The seasonal changes of the plane trees are reflected onto the coated glass, breaking the vertical continuity of the facade. This emphasizes the flowing feature of the steel plate design and endows the entrance, which is tucked away in the depth, with a centripetal force.
Interior Design
Public Space: Due to the extremely low ceiling height indoors, the ceiling in the public area is left exposed to make full use of the available height. Combined with metal, glass, and light-colored self-leveling floors, the hard decoration presents a sleek and neat effect with a cool tone. The introduction of plants and furniture provides users with a multi-layered experience, adding vitality and a warm atmosphere to the space.
Co-working Area: The third floor serves as a co-working area with multiple composite functional attributes. The semi-enclosed independent office spaces are integrated with the flowing public space. After stepping out of the office areas, people can start a conversation in the public space or pause to enjoy the scenery introduced into the interior. The translucent glass of the independent rooms alleviates the sense of confinement caused by enclosed walls and reflects indoor activities into the public area, creating a sense of transparency that aligns with the key attributes of a creative co-working space.
Staircase Space: One side of the staircase is clad with white perforated panels, which adds a sense of lightness and transparency to the space. At the same time, it also serves a decorative purpose, making the staircase no longer monotonous.
